ORANGE PARK – A specially trained crisis intervention team of Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies has been created to help other deputies cope with the emotional “roller coaster” effect of working the Somer Thompson murder case.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Mary Justino said on Wednesday, Nov. 4, that the peer counseling team was formed because the multi-agency investigation into the abduction and murder of the 7-year-old child two weeks ago is “taking its toll” on department personnel.

“There’s a certain mix of hopefulness when they pursue hot leads, then disappointment when the leads don’t pan out,” Justino said. “There’s determination, hopefulness and anguish. It’s a roller coaster.”

She said U.S. Marshalls and detectives from her office, the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement have received more than 2,800 tips related to Somer’s Oct. 19 abduction, which ended with the discovery of her body at a South Georgia landfill two days later.

No arrests have been made, no one is in custody and police have not named any persons of interest in the case, which has drawn national attention and created an outpouring of support from Orange Park residents and other Clay County communities.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler has been working with crew members from the TV show America’s Most Wanted for a segment that is scheduled to air on Saturday night, Nov. 7.

A reward fund established by the Justice Coalition and First Coast Crime Stoppers now stands at a combined $45,000.

Anyone with information about the case can call the Clay County Sheriff's Office tip line at (877) 227-6911 or Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-8477 (845-TIPS). Callers can remain anonymous.

Information also can be sent via e-mail to CART@claysheriff.com.

So nice to see a community pull together to help a grieving family. Nothing will bring Somer back, but it does make it easier when you have the support of the community.

You should all be proud of your community. You can't bring Somer back but you can surround her family with love and comfort.

I can't explain how this has torn me up and I just want to let you know there are a lot of people out here who care and you are in our prayers and thoughts. I truly believe a HUGE reward will help root him out from under whatever rock he lives under. I would love to see people with money step up and donate more money towards the reward.

Ok here i go again having to be the prick, why are we still collecting cash for this issue ?? The family really needs to settle down and deal with the issues and get back to daily lives again. We all know how hard this must be on them all includeing the father that was not even here. But it seems as if this is turning into a cummings deal with the family always in the news.

It is so wonderful to see the community come together in such a strong way that sends a message that we do indeed look out for one another. The future is that we must keep this as a reminder that it takes a village to protect a child as well. I hope we continue to love and show love in all ways that let this sad event teach us to know that we cannot be complacant.

Guess now everytime someones kid is murdered they can make a fortune off of it. This is getting old. I am deeply sorry for their loss and really felt bad for this family, but them making a million dollars off of this is ridiculous. Yes the family needed to bury the child and maybe a little cash to compensate for lost work for a few weeks but to continue you this begging for cash is unbelievable. They should be ashamed of themselves. Guess money grubbing takes precedence over greiving.

most of the funds should go to better protect the children walking and riding a bus to school... include adding security cameras at street corners... or better yet, educate the victims mother on how to improve her parenting skills.

I understand how the family and friends feel. I was kidnapped when I was 6 years old. A kidnappers useally live next door to their prey and is a person who has seriuos mental issues.

OPMAN and Kathy, I agree with you two. I believe every thing has been paid for. Head stone donated and around 20 K collected. No matter how much money you give the Family, Somer is gone. Donate the money to organizations that deal with this problem. I like the idea about putting cameras' up around the areas that the kids travel to school. The Mother is back to work and the live in boy friend that shouldn't touch this money, is working. It's getting old to hear from several groups, AKA Bikers saying Bikers don't stand for Child abuse. Come on people, nobody in their right mind are for Child abuse. I'm a Biker and support many Charitable cause's. Is this a case of Misery loves Company?

Johnny - that was out of line. improve her parent skills! People do what they need to do. The skate event raised 1k, I don't think are talking getting rich with these fundraisers. Put it in the twins college fund.

whodidthis:sadly there is only ONE twin who has the opportunity to go on to college in 11 years. i think the fundraising needs to end, no one should profit off a child's death.

Instead of giving all this raised money to Somer's family (and I sure hope that includes her biological Father) why not start some serious programs in the Florida schools in honor of lil Somer to help all children there. There are sooooo many sexual offenders in Florida unregistered why not use the money to begin rebuilding that and getting CONTROL of all filthy sex offenders.
