ORANGE PARK -- An alternative to the traditional surgical approach to hysterectomies is now available at Orange Park Medical Center.
The da Vinci Surgical System is a minimally invasive, state-of-the-art procedure that allows the surgeon to operate while seated comfortably at a console viewing a 3D image of the surgical field.
Patients experience reduced trauma to the body, reduced blood loss and need for transfusions, less post-operative pain and discomfort, less risk of infection, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and return to normal daily activities, and less scarring and improved cosmesis, the hospital said in a news release.
Despite general preference for minimally invasive procedures, the majority of the 600,000 hysterectomies done in the United States are still performed using large incisions.
Using the da Vinci system the surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls below the display, with hands and wrists naturally positioned relative to his or her eyes. The system seamlessly translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.
“The technology in the hands of a physician with strong laparoscopic skills will deliver a high-quality,l minimally invasive surgical option to almost any patient,” said surgical gynecologist Dr. Arjav Shah. “Along with a strong Ob/Gyn residency and fellowship background in laparoscopy and pelvic surgery, the addition of the da Vinci system at Orange Park will further provide my patients state of the art surgical solutions that result in quicker healing, less pain and better cosmetic outcomes.”
