MILDRED ELVINA LARUE "DOLLY"

Funeral services for Mildred Elvina "Dolly" LaRue, 80, of Green Cove Springs, Florida, were held on Saturday, January 31, 2009, in the Chapel of Lawrence-Helm Family Funeral Home, Green Cove Springs, with Father Darius Sleszynski officiating. Interment followed at Hickory Grove Cemetery. Pall bearers were Mildred’s four sons, Franklin, Timothy, Lewis, and Lawrence, and two nephews Jeffrey and Keith Olson. She passed away Monday evening January 26, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Jacksonville, where she had been a patient since January 9th. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Phillip Lewis LaRue; four sons, Franklin Elvin (Julia) of Keystone Heights; Timothy Carl (Cynthia); Lewis Charles (Melissa); and Lawrence Paul (Tammy); all of Green Cove Springs; and one daughter, Linda Lee Patterson (William), of Yulee; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, six great-great-children, one brother, Howard Leo Olson, Helena, NY, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a community of friends. She was predeceased by one son, Robert Phillip on August 30, 1949, at five months, her parents, Elvin and Mary Olson, and three brothers, Harold Vernon Olson on Sept. 23, 1994, Elvin John Olson on Sept. 7, 2006, and Robert Kenneth Olson on March 25, 1989. She was born October 11, 1928, in Sacred Heart, Minn., the only daughter of Elvin Leonard and Mary Louise Victoria (Derouchie) Olson; and was raised in Helena, NY, attending area schools there. She was most commonly known by the nickname "Dolly", which was given her by her Father, as a young girl. On June 12, 1948, at Sacred Heart Rectory, Massena, she married Phillip Lewis LaRue, son of the late Franklin and Mary Carville LaRue, with Father Kellogg officiating. The couple moved to Florida about 1949, where they have since resided, starting a house moving business there, where Dolly was in charge of obtaining permits, along with other office duties. All of her life, Dolly loved to dance, especially to any country music, or as she called it "Real Country with fiddles", where she thoroughly enjoyed step-dancing and square dancing. She also loved fishing and was "the proud operator of the siren" on their 1911 American LaFrance Fire Truck for the annual Green Cove Springs Christmas Parade each year. She was a very devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who loved every single member of her family equally with all the love a heart could give. She and Phillip can be very proud of the outstanding love they have taught their family. She will be missed dearly by her family and many, many friends. CHRISTINA LEA NIETMAN

Miss Christina Lea Nietman, 21, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, following a tragic car accident. She was born on September 15, 1987, in Orlando, Fla., and moved to Green Cove Springs thirteen years ago. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved butterflies and will be remembered for being a loving daughter, sister, and aunt. She was preceded in death by grandparents, Russell Nietman; and Harold; and Betty Bailey; and aunt, Vivian Reeves. Survivors include her parents, Gregory and Cheryl Nietman; sisters, Lana (Daniel Wilson) Nietman; Donna Bailey; and Tamara Ortiz; grandma, Irene Nietman; uncles, Gerald and Gary Neal; and Harold and Edward Bailey; aunt, Billy Jean Bailey; nieces and nephews, Mason Wilson; Michael Ferrer, Jr.; Iris Rivera-Bailey Angela Ortiz; and Jamary Ortiz. VICTORIA BIELIK

Mrs. Victoria Bielik, 86, of Orange Park, Fla., passed away Friday, January 30, 2009. She was born on April 7, 1922, in Harrisburg, Pa. She married Kamil Bielik in 1945, and they had two children together, John and Steve Bielik. Victoria and Kamil were married for forty seven years before he passed away in 1992. She is survived by her two sons, John (Patricia) Bielik and Steve (Marian) Bielik; sister, Irene Jagniatkowski; four grandchildren, Erik; Brian; Kevin; and Kara; and two great grandchildren, Liam and Megan. ALFOLENA SHEDD THOMAS

Mrs. Alfolena Shedd Thomas, 79, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2009. She was the daughter of the late William Walker and Louise Shedd. She was a life long resident of Clay County and loved by all who knew her. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Herman Clay Thomas; sons, Alan Thomas (Kendall); Ronnie Thomas (Gail); and Mark Thomas (Jennifer); brothers, William and Ed Shedd; sisters, Josephine Clow; Joan Goodlatte; and Linda Peters; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence-Helm Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie Surrency, officiating. SGT. EDWARD "SONNY" KIGHT, CCSO RET.

Sgt. Edward "Sonny" Kight, CCSO, Ret., 70, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2009. He was born on April 8, 1938, in Douglas, Ga., and had lived in the Middleburg area for most of his life. He honorably served in The United States Marine Corps for two years. Following his military service he worked for Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for eleven years, then for Green Cove Springs Police Department; later he retired from The Clay County Sheriff’s Office after twenty two years of dedicated service. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police and enjoyed music, camping, and boating in his leisure time. Sonny was preceded in death by his father, Ira Lynwood Kight, Sr., and by two brothers, Fred and Gary Kight. He is survived by his two beloved daughters, Lisa (Michael) Seymour and Susie (Robby) Midgett; his mother, Louise Goodman; four brothers and sisters, Carolyn (Harold) Canady; Ira Kight, Jr.; Benny Kight; and Nan (Jim) Couch; and seven grandchildren, Christopher; Mason; Cody; Kyle; Cade; Jessica; and Justin. The family will receive friends in the Broadus-Raines Chapel on Friday, February 6 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services with Sheriff’s Office Honors will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 2 p.m. in the Broadus-Raines Chapel officiated by Mark Cowan. JOHN PASCAL DESHAZO

Mr. John Pascal DeShazo, of Middleburg, Fla., passed away on Friday, January 23, 2009, at the age of 62. He attended Auburn University for a short while prior to joining the Navy in 1967. He was a career Navy man and retired as a Master Chief after 27 years of patriotic service to his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, James R. and Sarah Stone DeShazo of Moody, Ala.; stepmother, Ruby Lee DeShazo of Moody, Ala.; and his son Jared Keith DeShazo of Leeds, Ala. He is survived by his wife, Jan DeShazo of Middleburg; daughter, Jennifer Dykes (Ernest) of Leeds, Ala.; son, Jeremy Kyle DeShazo of Leeds, Ala.; brother, James Edward DeShazo (Othal) of Debary, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, as well as step-sons, Rob Stolting and Glen Stolting; step-daughters, Charlene Bole and Cherie Joseph; nine step-grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held at the American Legion Post in Middleburg on Saturday, February 7 where he was a Past Commander and served as 2nd Vice Commander until his death. He was also a life member of the VFW in Middleburg. The family would like to thank the Acosta-Rua branch of Community Hospice for their excellent care of him in his final days. Jacksonville is blessed to have such an organization. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Community Hospice in John DeShazo’s name.

Thank you for the obituary on John DeShazo. He was an old friend from my past, we were childhood through high school friends and we joined the military together as buddies. Although I have not seen him for years, I miss him.
